Shoulder Pain?

Date:
By Tommy

Living in Merewether we see a lot of surfers and swimmers with shoulder pain.

In our clinical experience many shoulder conditions result from a weakness or imbalance between the muscles of the rotator cuff, which work primaily as stabilisers, and our bigger muscles (deltoids, pectorals, latissimus dorsi), which work as our movers.

Recent research suggests that healthy shoulders should be able to produce a maximum external rotation isometric contraction of 20% of your total body weight in men and 16% in women.

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint. If you lack strength in your stabilisers you can get excessive movement of that ball within the socket which can lead to conditions such as subacromial impingment, bursitis, and various tendinopathies.

An appropriate assessment from one of our skilled physiotherapists can help to identify the source of your symptoms and get you back on track to doing the things you love with a pain free shoulder.
